How We Can Grow Our Faith in God
- What is faith? What is your understanding of faith? Where does faith originate?
Heb 11:1 “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Heb 12:2 “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” (Greek doesn’t have “our”)
Act 3:16 “And His name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.”
Faith is something real, spiritually tangible, and not just a mental knowledge, a concept or emotional feeling.
- Where does faith come from? What is the foundation of faith?
(Rom 10:17) “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
Real faith is not based on circumstances or personal feelings.
- Does faith have levels? (Rom 10:17; different adjectives Matt 8:10; Mk 4:40; 2 Thes 1:3)
Faith is like a seed, it can grow from one level to another, bigger and bigger.
- How do we grow in faith through Rom 10:17? (“rhema” ρημα Vs. “logos” λόγος)
We grow through meditating, confessing, and declaring the Word of God constantly.
We grow through meditating, confessing, and declaring the Word of God constantly.
Rom 10:8-10 “But what does it say? “The word (rhema) is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith which we preach): that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Faith must be in our hearts, that’s why just having mental knowledge of the Bible in our head does not produce faith, and it’s by confessing the Word of God that the Word is dropped down into our hearts and become a part of our spirits. Then we’ll not just have knowledge, but we’ll have revelations.
Old Testament Scriptures: Psalms 1:2-3
“But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates (Hagah) day and night. He shall be like a tree planted (the Word like seeds) by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”

Jesus’ first 30 years, not much to say???
Luke 2; Jesus was building Himself up in the Word of God. So when he grew up, and the toughest wilderness came, see how He dealt with it.
Matt 4:4 “But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word (rhema) that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Jesus spoke the written word; Jesus compared the Word with food, when we grow in the Word, we grow in faith.

- Don’t depend on feelings (2 Cor 5:7) but on the Word; the Bible is very precious, people have died over the centuries for translating the Bible.
- Spend more time meditating on the Word than acquiring Bible knowledge.
- Faith works by love (Gal 5:6; 1 Cor 13); faith and love are the antidotes of fear.
- It takes time to grow in faith; the Word of God is like a seed (Luk8; Mk4; Matt13, “logos” here, brings forth fruit with patience).
- Real faith will produce actions and results (Jam 2:17).
- We need to build our faith to prepare for tough times, and tough times will come, and then our faith will please God (Heb 11:6).
- Rest in the faith of Jesus, for He is the author and finisher of our faith (Heb 12:2). In the original Greek, it says “the author and finisher of faith.” This means we have the faith of God, so rest in it, don’t struggle to try to get faith, but rest and yield to His Word to receive faith.
Practice Philip 4:4-8 (Personalize the Scriptures; use index cards; read out verses when reading the Bible; post Bible verses around like OT Mosaic laws etc.)
Conclusion:
Faith is from God, something that’s spiritually real. We receive faith from the Word of God through meditating and confessing it regularly. Our growth in faith will sustain us in the most severe temptations and difficulties of this life. It’ll help us grow spiritually, live a consistent and balanced Christian life, and it’ll help us to believe God for greater and greater miracles as they’ll require more faith.
Since we’re only in our twenties, we still have a long way to go. The building of our faith will not only help us remain passionate for His name year after year, but we’ll just grow stronger and stronger in God. The Word of God will renew us to be living testimonies to the world that Christians are the most courageous and loving people in a generation full of doubts and unbelief.
